Abstract:
All human genes with multiple exons undergo splicing, during which the exon junction complex (EJC) is typically deposited 20-24 nucleotides upstream of the spliced junction. The EJC is subsequently involved in mRNA export and stability. We recently discovered that the depletion of the EJC’s RNA-binding component EIF4A3 causes coordinated skipping of neighboring exon pairs on the same transcript, defining a previously unrecognized splicing unit we term
